A Retrospective

As 2015 comes to a close, it’s time for Longhorns and Camels to come to a close, too.

I started the blog five years ago when we moved to Dubai. I can’t think of many things I’ve done consistently for five years! I wrote it for my family and friends to answer all those questions about what it was like to live in the Middle East. I wrote it for myself to remember those fascinating little details that easily escape us when time erases them from memory. But most of all, I wrote it for my kids. I wanted them to have a thoughtful account of our time abroad that would hopefully encourage them to revisit our experiences from an adult perspective when they grow up.

Even though they didn’t appear on the blog much, my kids were such a huge part of getting blog ideas published. They were in the backseat while I stalked gardeners. They got their heads bonked by my camera while they dangled from my chest in a baby carrier. They patiently waited when I would suddenly park the car to jump out and take a photo. They sweat in strollers, scampered through burning hot sand, and endured countless car trips when I turned the wrong way and got lost – all in the name of a good photo. Thank you little ones for not complaining (too much) and having so much patience with your camera crazy mother!

And to anyone who read, liked or commented on posts publicly and privately – thank you! I was always very grateful anytime someone visited my tiny home on the internet and took the time to read. I started out a bit skeptical of the whole blogging thing but ended up amazed by readers’ friendly and encouraging attitude and by the immense talent and creativity of other bloggers. Some of my “blogging friends” have moved on over the years and we’ve lost contact, but I still send out best wishes to them, wherever they may be now. Some are still dedicated to their craft and have many more stories to tell. Looking forward to continue following your adventures.

Longhorns and Camels brought me all sorts of interesting and unexpected experiences. I met and interviewed a famous chef. I got to see my name and blog’s name printed in a published book. I was contacted by House Hunters International to see if I was interested in appearing on their show. (Ha! Did you know it’s filmed after-the-fact? There’s no way I could pull that off!). More importantly though, blogging inspired me to get out and learn about the new country I called home and encouraged me to learn more about photography. Overall, it was such a positive experience.

Since I’ve repatriated and have now been home for more than a year, the reasons I started the blog are no longer applicable, so it’s time to say goodbye. I’m including some of my favorite photos and moments from the UAE below – a sort of Longhorns and Camels retrospective. 🙂

Happy New Year everyone! 2016 – a new year, a new start!

Lynda, I have thoroughly enjoyed this blog. I read every post, and was always excited when the notification for a new post would pop up in my inbox! I love your narrative and photographic style. Initially, I started reading to keep up with my good friend who had just moved away and had (gasp!) deactivated her Facebook account. But I quickly fell in love with your storytelling, and I would have enjoyed reading it even if I didn’t know you! Can’t wait to see what the next stories you decide to tell will be! 🙂

Dear Lynda, all the best back home and enjoy the kids while they are still at home. I wish I could still turn back time and spend more quality time with mine. Thanks for your well wish and happy new year 🙂

We ended our blogs at the same time! 🙂 Thanks for the advice – I know what you mean – these little ones don’t stay little long, do they? Thanks for stopping by and best of luck to you!

  6. A very happy 2016 to you and your family, Lynda. It is always sad when things come to an end, even in the blogosphere. One gets so used to reading certain blogs, and yours will be missed.

    • Lynda says:

Thanks so much Nat. Yours is one of my favorite Gulf-based blogs – always well-written and funny. I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun and many tales to tell in the UAE!

  9. Diana says:

I admit I didn’t want to hit the “like” button for this post. anyway…love that you are on instagram now …..so you are still out there. It doesn’t feel so final. 🙂

  10. Mitzie Mee says:

Wait…NOOOOOO!!! I have been hoping that your blogging break was just temporary. I have really enjoyed reading your posts through the years (yes, it’s years now!). You were one of the only bloggers in Dubai who stayed true after everything and everyone went PR-crazy, and I admire your sincerity and honesty. So sorry to hear that you won’t be blogging anymore, but happy that you stay on Instagram (your photos are amazing!).
PS: Househunters International is one of my husband’s favorite shows. He’ll be devastated to hear that it’s actually filmed after the decision has been made *lol*

    • Lynda says:

Aww – that’s so so sweet – thanks so much – this truly made my day. 🙂 It’s a shame we didn’t get to meet while in Dubai – I guess I missed the opportunity that one time I missed that little gathering – grrr. I’m still hoping you might swing through Texas at some point during your travels. Consider it next time you’re coming to the states – Houston is direct from Dubai, you know, and we have some great food! 🙂 I know – isn’t that funny about the show? I like it too – love looking into other people’s houses (empty and decorated) in general. When I found out they film after-the-fact, I felt a little betrayed! ha! In hindsight though, I guess it does make sense. I hope those people are compensated well – b/c they do a good job acting! Anyway – looking forward to keeping in touch through instagram and through your blog. 🙂 xxx

  11. Thank you for having taken us to so many facets of Dubai’s otherly world. A belated Happy New Year to you – and I hope to see you somewhere else, maybe with a new blog!?
