I moved from the Gulf of Mexico to the “Arabian” Gulf in November of 2010 with my husband and 2 sons. We then had a baby girl, our official Dubaian (rhymes with Hawaiian) in the family. (never mind – she’s definitely a Texan regardless of where she was born. 🙂 ) I am originally from Houston and lived there most of my life, with a few stints in Austin. My husband and I enjoy traveling, and usually spend our vacations in Europe visiting family in Spain, Italy or the UK.
My blog focuses on travel, culture and photography because those things have interested me for as long as I can remember. I also have a freakish obsession with documenting things, so one of the main reasons I started the blog was to share stories with my children when they are older.
We were excited when we were offered this opportunity to live in a different part of the world, even though it was difficult to leave friends and family behind. So far it has been an enlightening and interesting experience, but that’s not to say we aren’t homesick at times. My heart is definitely still in Texas.

Hey, Look what I found! Even though I’ve not moved to such a far away place I have felt like that many times! Look forward to reading more & watching your blog progress!
Hello!
I just found your blog and love it! I’m in the process of writing a book about living in Dubai and would love to include an excerpt or two from your blog (with proper attribution, of course)! Email me at anneprc@gmail.com and I can give you more details.
Thanks,
Anne
congrats for the blog, I will definetly follow your progress, it looks like we have parallel blogging lifes: i also landed in UAE (abu dhabi) about a year ago and i later started my blog (abuphampi.wordpress.com), we even have the same theme! ;P
if you read spanish, check it out
looking forward to reading more
cheers, abuphampi
Thanks for visiting and your comment! So funny – yes it does seem like we’ve had parallel lives! You have some really beautiful photos on your blog. I can probably get the gist of your posts in Spanish, although it might take me a while. I think I’ll take advantage of that google translate button instead. 🙂 Am looking forward to reading more about your adventures.
I have nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award! Check it out here:

Nice to discover you and your blog about life in Dubai! How long do you plan to stay in the area?
That is the million dollar question! ha! Not forever… that’s the only thing I’m sure of. 🙂
You’ve already been in the region longer than I have, and I am so ready to go home. I leave in less than 5 months…. I definitely recommend exploring Oman while you’re in the area.
Yes, I’m definitely feeling homesick. Oman is amazing and so very different from the UAE, isn’t it? We went to Muscat and have been to Musandam but would really like to spend more time there – it’s a fascinating country!
You should definitely explore more than Muscat and Musandam. All around Nizwa are lots of great places to explore, mostly in wadis or in the mountains. Many places you need a 4WD to explore. Hope you’ll visit!
Such travel adventures! Can’t wait to take a peek at your blog and see what else you’ve been up to!
Hi there…. I’m Canadian and have lived in Dubai for almost 5 years. Terrific blog. I’m really enjoying it!
Thanks so much! Your blog is great too – looking forward to reading more. 🙂
Love the name of your blog! I am from Dallas and I love Longhorn cattle!
Thanks! 🙂 I love the aesthetic of your blog! I thought it was so coincidental that you were living in the Middle East and now even funnier that you are from Texas! 🙂
Thank you for the compliment. This is my much needed creative outlet while living here in the Middle East. I am glad two Texas girls found each other and can relate to our Texas roots. Best wishes, Constance
P.S. I have another blog: therentedhome@wordpress.com (my other creative outlet in the desert)
Love your blog! Just found it after 4 months of living in Dubai – and read through all the archives. We are also from Houston/Austin! Loving our adventure but sometimes missing home too 🙂 Looking forward to more posts….
Sharoni
Hi there! Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. Always nice to hear from another Texan here in Dubai. 🙂 How are you settling in? Hope it’s all going well!
Thanks! I got so excited to see someone from Texas especially from my two favorite Texas cities! I grew up in Houston but we have lived in Austin the last 7 years. We are also UT grads 🙂 Settling in very well – I think we are past the settling in point! Feels like we’ve been here a LONG time, not just a mere four months. We also did a fantastic offroad/hiking trip through Oman and its fabulous wadis and mountains for spring break. So starkly beautiful!
Oh cool! We have a lot in common! 🙂 It’s pretty easy to make the transition here, isn’t it? Your Oman trip sounds awesome. We’ve been a couple of times but haven’t done the offroading thing which I hear is amazing.
I just found your blog and I’m happy to read through EVERYTHING. My husband is thinking of accepting a job somewhere in UAE. This will be our first move, if he a clots, out of the states. We have a 16 month old that is homeschooled and I’m in college full time.
Hi there – thanks for stopping by! I hope some of it was helpful to read 🙂 and good luck in making your decision!
I hope you don’t mind – I just nominated you for the ‘Shine On’ award. See: http://topofthetent.wordpress.com
Thank you so much! Very sweet of you to think of my blog – I really appreciate it!
Hi! I nominated you for the Liebster Award, an award for up-and-coming bloggers. Please get the badge and instructions for accepting at http://eleanordorothy.com/2013/11/28/liebster-award/. Thanks for keeping a great blog, and best of luck for the future!
Thank you for thinking of my blog! Appreciate it very much. 🙂
Enjoyed reading back thru your blog! My husband & I will probably be moving to Dubai from Houston, too! Looks like it will be in July or August. We will be there for about two years for his work. Any suggestions on where to live? We are in our late 50s with no kids. Financial stuff sounds confusing with keeping our house in Houston, so needing to be able to have money in both places for bills. Any hints on that sort of thing would be great.
Hi there! Thanks for reading and commenting. Great to hear from a fellow transplant from Houston. 🙂 I will email you directly in regards to your questions.
What an interesting journey you’ve been on — moving from Houston to Dubai with children!!! I definitely am putting you on my People I Admire list — just for doing what sounds exciting but can be really challenging. So glad you like my blog enough to follow it, and I’m doing the same with yours. I’d love to visit Dubai, but may never get the opportunity, so you’ll help me live vicariously. Best wishes for continued success. http://ohtheplaceswesee.com
Thanks for stopping by Rusha and for the kind comment. 🙂 You should definitely think about coming to Dubai for a visit! It’s a fascinating place.
Hello there!
I’d like to ask if you’re interested in doing a product feature on your blog?
Thanks!
No, I’m not interested in taking the blog in that direction, but thank you for stopping by!
I understand. But thanks anyway. 🙂
Hi There Lynda,
Thanks for taking the time to stop by my little corner of the blogosphere, and for the follow. Your support is greatly appreciated,
Have a great day 🙂
Eddie
looking forward to following along and seeing what you discover next! 🙂
I really love and enjoy your blog. And most of all I’m an Italian living in New York …and I need to share expat experiences. Thanks a lot!!
Aw – thank you so much! Your blog is great too. 🙂 My father is from Trieste and my sister lives in Milan! 🙂 How luck you are to live in New York. Looking forward to reading more. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I’ve read this first before anything so am looking forward to your freakish obsession with documenting things is that an OCD thing LOL > I have personally have lists everywhere hey ho. Right > Thanks Longhorns’ and onwards 🙂
Ha! I’m a list maker too. Yes – probably a touch of OCD here – but just in regards to certain things like photos and music. 🙂
